The erotic drawings by Rodin are less familiar to the public than his scultures. And yet at the turn of the twentieth century, they emerged as a crucial phase along the path to modernity. This exhibition catalogue bridges the gap by offering an original excursion into what R.M. Rilke described as " the extreme peak " of Rodin's work . The selected 172 symbolise the pictorial oeuvre of the master, starting from the first drawings touched up with gouache of the 1890s to the large sheets stumped with black spencil executed in the years around 1910. They are a clear reflection of the graphic thinking of Rodin in the way they were conceived as fantasised drawings of the sexual body of his models. The diversity of the essays contributes to a better understanding of their infinite wealth.
